How to Choose the Right Breast Implant Size
Many women who want breast augmentation have a mental image about what they want their breasts to look like. What many women don’t know is how many CC’s and what cup size they should be in order to have the prettiest breasts possible. And why should they? It is not their job to know exactly what size implant they are looking for. That is the job of the surgeon to figure out based on the woman’s goals.
What Doesn’t Dr. Schwartz Do To Determine Size?
Dr. Schwartz knows that the #1 cause of breast implant revision surgeries are surgeons selecting the wrong size implant. It’s unfortunately very common in breast augmentation surgeries. That is why Dr. Schwartz spends extra time speaking with you to learn your goals and share his recommendations on how to achieve the breasts you want. Dr. Schwartz is adamant about not doing things he knows will not work. This includes:
- Naming cup sizes – This approach is essentially useless. Saying things like, “You should be a C cup” has no merit behind it other than what the surgeon thinks. As previously mentioned, many women have an idea of what they want their breasts to look like (including cup size). Just because women have an idea, does not mean that that idea will produce the best results possible. Dr. Schwartz would much rather talk with you and work with you to find the right size implant, rather than just telling you what he thinks.
- Putting implants in a bra – Having women place implants in their bra to determine which size would look the best is not a good way to determine proper size. Think of it this way: women know that holding a dress up to their body isn’t going to tell them exactly how the dress will fit. So why would putting a breast implant in your bra work?
- Basing off a series of measurements – While this approach is more exact and can give the surgeon a better idea of what size they should be using, it still doesn’t account for what Dr. Schwartz calls, “The Pretty Factor.” Dr. Schwartz always wants to help you achieve the prettiest breasts possible and basing your cup size off of measurements won’t always produce the prettiest breasts. It takes experience and an eye for detail to figure out The Pretty Factor and measurements alone cannot achieve this.
What Does Dr. Schwartz Do To Determine Size?
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Schwartz approaches breast implant sizing from a scientific viewpoint. The first step is to come in for a consultation. During your initial consultation, Dr. Schwartz will speak with you about your goals. At that point, he will show you pictures based around your goal and ask you very specific questions about what you like and don’t like about the photos. After your initial consultation, Dr. Schwartz will not choose the exact size of your breast implants, but will have a range of sizes, textures and types he is considering for your breast implants.
When you come in for surgery, Dr. Schwartz will bring a variety of different implants into the operating room. When the surgery starts, Dr. Schwartz will place a set of test breast implants to determine which implants will fit you best. If he is unsatisfied with how the test implants look, he will take them out and try another pair. This process will be repeated until he is absolutely certain he has the right implant size, texture and type for you (based on your discussions during the initial consultation). Once he is satisfied that the implants will meet your goals, he will place your breast implants. Even after the implants are placed, Dr. Schwartz will take the time to ensure they are exactly what you are looking for and if he needs to do additional work to achieve the best results possible, he will.
It is important to note that because of Dr. Schwartz’s extensive experience and training, his ability to get the right implant size, type and texture in the beginning is very high. Dr. Schwartz is not like other plastic surgeons who will place implants and be done with surgery. He will test to make sure everything is exactly what you were looking for. One thing Dr. Schwartz has learned over his years in practice is that, on average, the wrong implant size is placed in patients 30% of the time (leading to necessary breast implant revision surgeries). Almost a third of the time in breast augmentation surgeries, the wrong size implants are being placed. That is why Dr. Schwartz takes extra time and care when he places breast implants. He wants to make sure that all of your goals have been met and you leave surgery with the prettiest breasts possible.
