Cheek Augmentation
What is cheek augmentation?
Hollow or sunken cheeks can make you appear significantly older than you actually are, and no one wants to be mistaken for being older than their true age. At Robert Schwartz Plastic Surgery, plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Schwartz offers cheek augmentation to restore youthful facial contours and lift. Cheek augmentation is accomplished with either temporary dermal fillers or longer-lasting cheek implants.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Schwartz can discuss the pros and cons of both options in detail and what will best fit your needs, concerns, and goals. Contact our Dallas, TX office to schedule an appointment and learn how cheek augmentation can help you get a younger, fuller-looking face.
Cheek augmentation Candidates
Ideal candidates for cheek augmentation are men and women who:
- Want fuller cheeks
- Have age-related volume loss in their cheeks
- Have naturally flat or hollow cheeks
- Have lost a significant amount of weight, resulting in deflated cheeks
- Have asymmetry in their cheeks caused by genetics, a health condition, or an injury
- Are in overall good health
Nonsurgical cheek augmentation with dermal fillers is a good option for patients who want to avoid the time and expense of surgery. Since dermal fillers are temporary, it can also help patients get a better idea of the amount of volume and lift they want before committing to surgical cheek augmentation. Cheek implants are better for patients who want a longer-lasting solution and are able to commit time to their recovery after surgery.
Cheek augmentation surgical technique
Prior to your procedure, Dr. Schwartz will perform a detailed exam to create a treatment plan that is ideal for your unique facial structure. During your consultation, you will decide on your preferred method: nonsurgical dermal fillers or surgical cheek implants.
Dermal fillers can be performed in our Dallas, TX office as an outpatient procedure in about 20 – 30 minutes. With fillers, the points of injection will be marked along the hollows of the cheeks. Then, the fillers will be gently injected into the cheeks and massaged to create an even fullness. You will be able to leave immediately after the procedure and continue your normal activities.
Surgical cheek augmentation is an outpatient procedure that is performed in an accredited facility since patients are usually put under with general anesthesia. Once you are prepped, small incisions will be made inside the mouth through the upper gums so a pocket can be created over the cheekbone. Then, the implants will be securely placed in the pockets and the incisions will be sutured. The surgery usually takes about an hour and you will be released to a responsible adult after an observation period to recover at home.
What to expect after cheek augmentation
With surgery, you should expect to experience tightness, swelling, and bruising for 1 – 2 weeks following your procedure. Vigorous activity that will cause your facial muscles to strain (like weightlifting) should be avoided for 7 – 10 days. Optimal healing usually takes about two months, but the results are long lasting.
With dermal fillers, your face may feel tender and sore with minor swelling for about 3 – 5 days. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to ease your discomfort. Optimal results are usually seen after about 10 – 14 days. Follow-up treatments will be needed as fillers are a temporary treatment.
