Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

Robert Schwartz Plastic Surgery in Dallas, TX is proud to offer the latest treatments to safely reduce stubborn fat from the body. Liposuction is a body contouring treatment that gets rid of fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks to produce a more contoured appearance. It is an ideal treatment for men and women who have specific areas that are resistant to diet and exercise.

This cosmetic procedure can treat a single area or be blended to address several body parts at one time. During your initial visit, plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Schwartz will examine areas of concern so you can reach your aesthetic goals. We will strive to help you look and feel your absolute best.

Ideal Candidates of Liposuction

Liposuction is a great procedure for those with a healthy weight, but have stubborn pockets of fat that cannot be lost with diet alone. Women and men considering liposuction should have good skin elasticitylaxity because it does not address loose skin.

It is also important to understand that liposuction is not a treatment for losing weight.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Schwartz will discuss realistic expectations.

Liposuction Surgical Technique

Traditional Liposuction:

‍Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. A very small incision is made in the skin and a cannula will be placed. The cannula is a tool that helps loosen the fat as it is being suctioned out. Once the selected amounts of fat have been removed, Dr. Schwartz will close the incision. Depending on the number of areas treated, your surgery could last 1-63 hours. In your recovery area, your post-operation nurse will help manage your pain and care for your incision site until your discharge.

VASER Liposuction:

‍As one of the nation’s few plastic surgery experts utilizing the VASER ultrasonic liposuction system, Dr. Schwartz can provide just the right touch for you.

The next generation in body contouring technology, VASER Liposuction uses ultrasonic energy to precisely break apart and emulsify fat deposits for easy, safe removal. Trained by the inventor of the process, Dr. Alfredo Hoyos in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Schwartz was the first Dallas plastic surgeon trained in VASER Hi Def. With this advanced technique, your muscle definition is uncovered and identified, allowing Dr. Schwartz to safely and accurately strip all the fat that stands in its (and your) way. The result is a more beautifully sculpted appearance – all with significantly less pain and less time off for recovery. Still, no matter how advanced the tools, they require a surgeon with the vision to see your potential and the skill to take you there.

Vibrasat Liposuction:

The Vibrasat Pro by Möller Medical is a cutting-edge liposuction device designed to remove fat more easily and evenly. Like other liposuction machines, the Vibrasat vaccuums out unwanted fat by passing hollow metal suction rods (cannulas) through the treatment area. But the Vibrasat cannulas do this while pulsing at a rate of 3000 to 6000 strokes per minute. These vibrations help to break up fat cells, making them easier to suction out while minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues.

VASER/Vibrasat Lipoction:

For the ultimate liposuction body sculpting results, we combine the VASER and Vibrasat liposuction machines in one treatment. First, we pre-treat the fat with VASER ultrasound. This liquifies the unwanted fat. We then remove the liquid fat with the Vibrasat suction device. This combination allows us to remove the maximum amount of fat in the most even way possible. And both the VASER probe and the Vibrasat cannulas pass through the fat with less force than traditional liposuction instruments. That usually means less less postoperative pain and less swelling.

What to expect after liposuction

Recovery after liposuction is generally quick and straightforward. Most patients can get out of bed and take care of themselves on the first day. Pain after surgery is usually mild to moderate and rarely requires strong painkillers. If you have a desk job, you can likely return to work within four days. Showering is allowed two days after surgery, and most people can start driving again within a week.

You will need to wear a compression garment for about three to four weeks, depending on how quickly your swelling goes down. We close your incisions with dissolving sutures and surgical glue, so you won't need to worry about removing stitches. You'll see visible results right away, with about 75% of the final result showing at one month and 90% at two months.

Exercise can usually be resumed three weeks after surgery. This recovery plan helps you get back to your routine quickly while enjoying the benefits of your procedure.

Liposuction is celebrated worldwide as a sophisticated approach to harmoniously sculpt and refine your natural silhouette. For those graceful women whose stubborn, hereditary fat deposits resist even the most dedicated diet and exercise, liposuction offers a gentle solution to achieve a balanced, elegant profile.

One of the most alluring aspects of liposuction is its versatility. Whether you wish to subtly contour your abdomen, enhance the curves of your hips and thighs, refine your arms, or soften your neckline and chin, every treatment is thoughtfully customized to your unique body and aesthetic aspirations. It’s important to note that liposuction is not intended as a weight-loss solution but as a means to perfect specific areas when you are already near your ideal weight. Maintaining your results with a balanced lifestyle is key to sustaining the refined look you desire.

Recent advancements—such as the innovative VASERlipo technique, which uses gentle ultrasound energy to delicately emulsify fat cells—have made the procedure safer, less invasive, and remarkably precise. These cutting-edge methods allow for a more accurate, graceful sculpting and can even help tighten skin in treated areas, ensuring every curve is elegantly defined.

At Robert Schwartz Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves on providing individualized, high-touch care. Whether you seek to enhance a single contour or refine multiple areas, our commitment is to help you reveal a silhouette that reflects both your inner confidence and timeless elegance.

Most frequently asked questions

Can fat removed with the Vaser be used for reinjection?

Fat removed with the Vaser (VASER liposuction) has been used for reinjection successfully. It has mainly been used for buttock and breast augmentation.

How do I know if I need liposuction or a tummy tuck?

Liposuction and tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) are both excellent contouring procedures for the abdomen. But they serve different and complementary purposes:

  • Liposuction primarily removes fat. (The Vaser ultrasonic system I use also tightens the skin but this is a relatively mild effect.)
  • Tummy tucks tighten loose skin and also repair abdominal muscles that have been stretched out (usually from pregnancy).

If your abdomen is relatively lean but protrudes outward, you need a tummy tuck. Likewise, a tummy tuck is probably right if you have loose, hanging abdominal skin.

On the other hand, if your skin is relatively smooth and elastic, but there is a fat layer you can't get rid of, liposuction is probably the procedure for you. Of course, sometimes the problem is fat, skin and/or muscle. In that case, both liposuction and a tummy tuck may be needed.

During your consultation, we examine your abdomen carefully and assess your goals to determine which procedure better meets your needs.

How painful is liposuction?

We use VASER ultrasound to liquify the fat before suctioning and then remove it with the Vibrasat system. since both of these pass through the fat with less resistance, your postoperative pain will likely be mild to moderate. Very few patients require narcotic pain medication with our liposcution technique.

How soon can I exercise after liposuction?

Most types of exercise can be restarted three weeks after liposuction.

Performing physically strenuous activities earlier than this can impair healing.

Is it normal to have a sore throat after surgery?

Sore throat can happen after surgery. It is usually caused by the endotracheal tube the anesthesiologist uses to help you breath. It is somewhat more common in women than in men. The soreness is usually mild and goes away within a few days. A severe sore throat or one that lasts for more than a few days should be reported to Dr. Schwartz.

What type of anesthesia will be used for my liposuction?

Most liposuctions are performed under general anesthesia (i.e. you will be asleep). We use only board-certified physician anesthesiologists. Smaller liposuctions can be performed under local tumescent anesthesia.

General does have an advantage in liposuction that is rarely discussed: it is very difficult to get larger regions of fat completely numb with just local anesthesia because of their curving three dimensional nature. Since you are awake, the surgeon will typically bypass areas that are too sensitive. That leaves more fat behind and can keep you from getting your best possible result.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure to re-contour specific areas of the body by vacuuming out excess fat through minimal incisions.

What is Liposelection?

Liposelection is the third-generation ultrasonic liposuction technique developed by Sound Surgical Technologies. Before suctioning, a narrow metal rod called a VASER probe is passed through the fat to be removed. The VASER probe is connected to an ultrasound generator. The ultrasound waves liquefy the fat cells as the probe passes through. Specially designed suction cannulas are then used to gently remove the liquid fat.

Because the Liposelection technique liquefies the fat before removal, it is gentler on the tissues and produces less postoperative pain. There is usually less swelling and bruising as well, resulting in a quicker recovery. Most importantly, Liposelection is more precise and yields more consistent, smoother results.

We use Liposelection for most liposuctions.

When can I return to work after liposuction?

Most patients with desk jobs can return to work in 4 days. Patients with more physically demanding jobs will require a longer recuperation.

Where are the scars from liposuction?

Liposuction is performed via multiple small incisions where the suction cannulas are introduced. Because we use advanced VASER microcannula instrumentation, our incisions are generally ¼ inch or less. Incisions this small are usually difficult to see when fully healed.

When can I drive after liposuction?

Most patients can resume driving seven days after liposuction.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction are men or women who have areas with persistent fatty deposits despite a reasonable diet and exercise program. Liposuction can be performed on overweight individuals, as well. In these cases, the goal is to optimize the patient’s appearance at whatever weight they are comfortable maintaining. It is always best to maintain a stable weight after the procedure. Significant weight fluctuations will compromise the long-term results.

Where will my liposuction be performed?

We perform liposuction in our private operating suite.

Will insurance pay for liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure and therefore, not covered by health insurance.

Will Insurance Pay for a Liposuction?

Insurance does not cover liposuction. We offer a range of financing options from United Medical Credit, Cherry, CareCredit, or PatientFi. That means we can usually get patients with most credit scores financed.

Are the Results of a Liposuction Long-lasting?

Liposuction offers significant and visible reductions in fat, and the results are long-lasting provided patients maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.
