What is LIPOSUCTION?

Robert Schwartz Plastic Surgery in Dallas, TX is proud to offer the latest treatments to safely reduce stubborn fat from the body. Liposuction is a body contouring treatment that gets rid of fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, and buttocks to produce a more contoured appearance. It is an ideal treatment for men and women who have specific areas that are resistant to diet and exercise.

This cosmetic procedure can treat a single area or be blended to address several body parts at one time. During your initial visit, plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Schwartz will examine areas of concern so you can reach your aesthetic goals. We will strive to help you look and feel your absolute best.

IDEAL CANDIDATES of liposuction

Liposuction is a great procedure for those who are at a healthy weight, but have stubborn pockets of fat that cannot be lost with diet alone. Women and men considering liposuction should have good skin laxity because it does not address loose skin.

It is also important to understand that liposuction is not a treatment for losing weight. Women having liposuction should have childbearing behind them as this could compromise the outcome. During your initial consultation, Dr. Schwartz will discuss realistic expectations.

Liposuction SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

Traditional Liposuction:
Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. A very small incision is made in the skin and a cannula will be placed in the incision. The cannula is a tool that helps loosen the fat as it is being suctioned out. Once the selected amounts of fat have been removed, Dr. Schwartz will close the incision. Depending on the number of areas treated, your surgery could last 1 – 3 hours. In the our recovery area, your post-operation nurse will help manage your pain and care for your incision site until your discharge.

VASERlipo:
As one of the nation’s few plastic surgery experts utilizing the VASER ultrasonic liposuction system, Dr. Schwartz can provide just the right touch for you.

Serving as the next generation in body contouring technology, VASERlipo (or LipoSelection) uses ultrasonic energy to precisely break apart and emulsify fat deposits for easy, safe removal. Trained by the inventor of the process, Dr. Alfredo Hoyos in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Schwartz is the only Dallas plastic surgeon to date trained in VASER Hi Def. With this advanced technique, your muscle definition is uncovered and identified, allowing Dr. Schwartz to safely and accurately strip all the fat that stands in its (and your) way. The result is a more beautifully sculpted appearance — all with significantly less pain and less time off for recovery. Still, no matter how advanced the tools, they require a surgeon with the vision to see your potential and the skill to take you there.

WHAT TO EXPECT After Liposuction

You may be in recovery at home from liposuction for 1 – 3 weeks depending on the number of treatments performed and the size of the treatment area. It is normal to see swelling and bruising for 1 – 2 weeks, and you can have the sutures removed on day seven to day ten. What is most important after having liposuction is to allow your body time to recover and rest.

Once you return to work after your procedure, you should do your best to take it easy. To build up your strength, stick to light workouts and go for walks as approved by Dr. Schwartz. Keep in mind you may see some changes after six weeks, but it takes 6 – 10 months before your new body shape and contour is attained.

FAQ

liposuction

I have read and agree to the FAQ terms of use.
Where will my liposuction be performed?

We perform most liposuctions on an outpatient basis at a JCAHO-certified ambulatory surgery center. Some larger volume liposuctions require an overnight stay and are performed at the hospital.

What is Liposelection?

Liposelection is the third-generation ultrasonic liposuction technique developed by Sound Surgical Technologies. Before suctioning, a narrow metal rod called a VASER probe is passed through the fat to be removed. The VASER probe is connected to an ultrasound generator. The ultrasound waves liquefy the fat cells as the probe passes through. Specially designed suction cannulas are then used to gently remove the liquid fat.

Because the Liposelection technique liquefies the fat before removal, it is gentler on the tissues and produces less postoperative pain. There is usually less swelling and bruising as well, resulting in a quicker recovery. Most importantly, Liposelection is more precise and yields more consistent, smoother results.

We use Liposelection for most liposuctions.

How painful is liposuction?

One of the advantages of VASER technology is that it is gentler on the tissues than conventional liposuction equipment. This results in milder postoperative pain that is usually well-controlled with oral analgesics.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure to re-contour specific areas of the body by vacuuming out excess fat through minimal incisions.

Who is a candidate for liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction are men or women who have areas with persistent fatty deposits despite a reasonable diet and exercise program. Liposuction can be performed on overweight individuals, as well. In these cases, the goal is to optimize the patient’s appearance at whatever weight they are comfortable maintaining. It is always best to maintain a stable weight after the procedure. Significant weight fluctuations will compromise the long-term results.

Will insurance pay for liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure and therefore, not covered by health insurance.

How soon can I exercise after liposuction?

Most types of exercise can be restarted 3-4 weeks after liposuction. Performing physically strenuous activities earlier than this can impair healing.

When can I drive after liposuction?

Most patients can resume driving seven days after liposuction.

Where are the scars from liposuction?

Liposuction is performed via multiple small incisions through which the suction cannulas are introduced. Because we use advanced VASER microcannula instrumentation, our incisions are generally ¼ inch or less. Incisions this small are usually difficult to discern when fully healed.

What type of anesthesia will be used for my liposuction?

Most liposuctions are performed under general anesthesia (i.e. you will be asleep). We use only board-certified physician anesthesiologists. Some minor liposuctions can be performed under local tumescent anesthesia.

When can I return to work after liposuction?

When can I return to work after liposuction? Most patients with desk jobs can return to work in 4-7 days. Patients with more physically demanding jobs will require a longer recuperation.

How do I know if I need liposuction or a tummy tuck?

Liposuction and tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) are both excellent contouring procedures for the abdomen. But they serve different and complementary purposes:

  • Liposuction primarily removes fat. (The Vaser ultrasonic system I use also tightens the skin but this is a relatively mild effect.)
  • Tummy tucks tighten loose skin and also repair abdominal muscles that have been stretched out (usually from pregnancy.)

So if your abdomen is relatively lean but protrudes outward, you probably need a tummy tuck. Likewise, if you have loose, hanging abdominal skin, a tummy tuck is probably right.

On the other hand, if your skin is relatively smooth and elastic but there is a fat layer you can't get rid of, liposuction is probably the procedure for you.

Of course, sometimes the problem is fat, skin and/or muscle. In that case, both liposuction and a tummy tuck may be needed.

During your consultation, we examine your abdomen carefully and assess you goals to determine which procedure better meets your needs.

Can fat removed with the Vaser be used for reinjection?

Fat removed with the Vaser (Liposelection) has been used for reinjection successfully. It has mainly been used for buttock augmentation.

Is it normal to have a sore throat after surgery?

Sore throat can happen after surgery. It is usually caused by the endotracheal tube the anesthesiologist uses to help you breath. It is somewhat more common in women than in men. The soreness is usually mild and goes away within a few days. A severe sore throat or one that lasts for more than a few days should be reported to Dr. Schwartz.

Can I donate blood before surgery?

Donating blood causes a temporary anemia. This usually corrects within 1-2 weeks. Nonetheless, we recommend that patients do not donate blood for at least one month before cosmetic surgery.

Some patients have expressed interest in donating blood for their own use, if needed. Since most cosmetic procedures are designed to produce minimal to moderate blood loss, transfusion is almost never needed. While you are, of course, free to self-donate blood, this would almost always be unnecessary.
