About Breast Augmentation

It is not uncommon for women to be critical of their bodies. Especially in Dallas where people work so hard to look their best. One common attribute women tend to be most critical about is their breasts. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Schwartz at Robert Schwartz Plastic Surgery knows and understands the struggles many women have with the appearance of their breasts, and is committed to helping women in the Dallas, TX area achieve the most appealing breasts possible.

Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that redefines the breasts to create a fuller look. It is often considered to be one of the most sought after cosmetic surgeries, offering women who are unsatisfied with their breast size an effective option for improvement. With the help of implants or a fat transfer, this procedure improves breast shape, size, and symmetry, and creates a desirable and natural-looking outcome.

About Breast Implants

During the consultation, the correct implant will be recommended based on your body frame as well as the results you wish to achieve. Implants come in different sizes and profiles, as well as shapes and textures — all of which are taken into consideration in order to attain the desired appearance. Today, the most common implants are saline or silicone, both widely chosen and safely approved by the FDA. It is important to mention that those considering saline implants must be 18 years of age, while in order to receive augmentation with silicone, patients must be at least 21. Other options include gummy bear implants and a fat transfer. Aside from the type of augmentation chosen, there are other important factors to consider:

Size
It’s impossible to meet the vision a patient has for their breasts by taking a “one size fits all” approach to breast augmentation. Implant size is determined based on the number of CCs of silicone or saline used. To pick the appropriate amount, we look at how much original tissue exists and the size you desire to be. During surgery, it is common for Dr. Schwartz to temporarily place several implants to get an idea of the best fit.

Shape
Breast implants are made in either a round or teardrop shape. Both shapes are commonly used; however, a large majority of our patients decide a round-shaped implant. It often looks more natural and adds a fullness to the upper breast that a larger percentage of patients desire.

Profile
Breast implant profile refers to the projection. Meaning, this is what one sees from the side view. The most common projections include low, intermediate, or high.

When Dr. Schwartz asks a patient what their vision is for themselves, he will be able to deliver by offering the widest range of options and styles to meet their needs. These considerations, combined with our surgeon's expertise, ensures the right outcome is attained. Turning a vision into a reality is what Dr. Schwartz specializes in.

Ideal Candidates

The choice to have mammoplasty (breast aug) surgery is a personal one for our patients. If you are contemplating this treatment, it is important you do it for the right reasons. Patients should be physically healthy with breasts that are developed and of appropriate age to get implants. Women who are dissatisfied with the size and shape of their breasts because they appear shapeless and flat may benefit from breast augmentation surgery. In addition, if your breasts have been affected by weight loss or pregnancy, this cosmetic treatment can bring them back to life with increased volume. It is also a welcomed solution for women who lift weights or have an overall lack of natural breast tissue.

Dr. Schwartz never rushes the process and encourages his patients to take their time, think it over, and talk it out with those close to them. Dr. Schwartz will not move forward with the procedure until he gets a complete sense you are confident with your decision. This is one of the many reasons why his patients have full trust in Dr. Schwartz and his practice.

Surgical Techniques

Incision type, as well as implant placement, are discussion points that are made before surgery. During the procedure, an incision is created and then the implant will be slipped into its position. Dr. Schwartz is willing to take a little longer in the operating room and use his electrocautery technique to be gentler when opening the implant pocket. The decision as to where to place the implant and the incision type is based on numerous factors, including the type and degree of implant enlargement as well as surgeon recommendation. Regarding incision location, scarring is not seen by the naked eye. Implant placement is determined based on body type, implant size, and lifestyle.

What to Expect

How do you really know you are getting the right procedure done by Dr. Schwartz, or any other doctor for that matter? The difference is in the technique and the process leading up to the actual breast augmentation. Dr. Schwartz uses clear language when talking to each of his patients, so they wholly understand the procedure. He’s also available to answer any questions the patient has about the preparation, the procedure itself, or the recovery. Being informed about each and every part of the procedure is vital for all patients to be satisfied, and Dr. Schwartz takes the time to ensure it happens.

Breast enhancement surgery is performed as an outpatient surgery using general anesthesia. Once the incision is made, the implant chosen for enhancement will be inserted through the incision and deposited into a pocket created for it, and then fitted into its proper position. Dr. Schwartz uses an electrocautery technique that is more accurate and leaves the patient with minimal bruising, bleeding, and swelling. After this process, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical adhesives.

All patients will be taken into recovery and observed and monitored before being released. The recovery time with Dr. Schwartz's technique typically is much quicker than traditional surgery, as most women can get back to their daily activities 24 hours after the procedure and go back to work in 3 – 4 days. Patients will be sent home wearing a compression garment to assist with swelling. Within a few days, the swelling and bruising will start to decrease, and the breasts will begin to feel normal as they settle into their new position. A large percentage of patients can return to normal activities within the first week; however, exercise should be avoided for a minimum of 6 – 8 weeks. Cosmetic breast surgery creates beautiful outcomes that look and feel natural.
